Cataract

Progressive clouding of the natural lens.

Why does it happen?
As protein structures within the natural lens undergo a gradual chang, this causes the lens to become more and more opaque & rigid. This is mostly age related but can be caused by injury, some medications, or certain diseases - and can affect one or both eyes.

How does it affect vision?
The severity of the cataract depends on your individual health profile and age. the clouding of the lens results in faded colours, blurry vision, halso and glare in different lighting conditions, or difficulty in seeing at night.

Treatment
Exchanging the natural crystalline lens is the only effective treatment option for cataracts available today, and there is no established alternative medicine.

Lens Replacement Surgery

Lens replacement surgery involves the replacement of your natural lens inside your eye with an artificial lens. It is one of the most performed surgeries in the world and usually takes no more than 20-30 minutes. With the implantation of the trifocal Liberty IOL, not only your natural lens is replaced, but the IOL is also able to correct previous refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. IOL Options

There are many IOL options for the treatment of cataract & presbyopia. We categorize our IOL solutions into two main groups: Monofocal lenses and Trifocal lenses.

Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL's) 

are an advanced solution that can provide sharp vision at all distances without the need for glasses after cataract or lens exchange surgery. If you have astigmatism, a trifocal toric lens can be implanted to simultaneously correct astigmatism, with the same lens.

Monofocal intraocular lenses (IOL‘s)

can provide sharp vision at only one distance. Clear vision is usually set for far distance and glasses are needed for intermediate and near vision tasks. If you have astigmatism, a monofocal toric lens can be implanted.

Lens Replacement surgery

How is the trifocal Liberty IOL implanted?

The crystalline lens is carefully removed through a small incision at the edge of the cornea
An intraocular lens is implanted through the same incision.
The intraocular lens stays in a stable position within the eye.

Cataract surgery is usually not painful due to the use of anaesthesia.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS CATARACT SURGERY AND WHAT ABOUT THE RISKS?

While the surgery is considered a safe procedure, the occurrence of complications and adverse events cannot be completely ruled out. However, these adverse events are relatively rare and can be treated successfully.
